Valorant for Beginners: Agents, Economy and Tips to Win More Rounds
Short answer: Valorant is a 5-versus-5 tactical shooter. One team attacks and tries to plant the Spike; the other defends. Win rounds by playing with your team, keeping your crosshair at head height, and buying smartly between rounds. Check the official patch notes after each update.
How a match works
- Teams swap between attacking and defending halfway through the match.
- Attackers win a round by planting the Spike and letting it detonate, or by eliminating the defenders.
- Defenders win by defusing the Spike, eliminating the attackers, or running out the clock.
The four agent roles
- Duelists lead the way into sites and take fights.
- Initiators gather information and break defensive positions so the team can enter.
- Controllers block vision with smokes and walls to shape the fight.
- Sentinels hold areas, watch flanks and slow down enemy pushes.
Learn one or two agents well instead of switching every game.
The economy in one minute
You earn credits each round — more for winning, kills and planting. When money is low, the whole team "saves" (buys little) so everyone can afford full weapons and shields together next round. Buying alone while your team saves usually loses both rounds.
Five habits that win more rounds
- Crosshair placement: keep your aim at head height where enemies will appear.
- Stop before you shoot: moving makes most guns inaccurate.
- Call out what you see: enemy count and location, short and clear.
- Trade your teammates: stay close enough to punish the enemy who takes a fight.
- Warm up in the Range for a few minutes before playing ranked.
