Dota 2 for Beginners: Roles, Last Hits and How to Improve

Short answer: Dota 2 is a 5-versus-5 strategy game where each team defends its Ancient. Pick a simple hero, learn your role, practise last hits for gold, and stick with your team. Patch changes are listed on the official Dota 2 patches page.

The goal

Each team starts at opposite corners of the map. Three lanes connect the bases, guarded by towers. Push down the lanes, destroy the enemy buildings and finally their Ancient to win.

The five positions

  • Position 1 (carry): farms gold early and becomes the strongest hero late in the game.
  • Position 2 (mid): plays the middle lane alone and makes plays around the map.
  • Position 3 (offlane): a tough hero who disrupts the enemy carry and starts fights.
  • Positions 4 and 5 (supports): protect the cores, place wards for vision and set up kills.

Gold basics: last hits and denies

You earn most gold by landing the final hit on enemy creeps. You can also deny your own creeps when they're low on health, so the enemy doesn't get that gold. Practising last hits in a bot or demo game is one of the fastest ways to improve.

Tips for your first games

  1. Start with heroes that are easy to play and forgiving; the hero guides in the game client suggest builds.
  2. Buy a Town Portal Scroll so you can return to defend or join fights.
  3. Watch the minimap often — most deaths come from enemies you didn't see coming.
  4. Group up with your team in the middle and late game instead of farming alone.
  5. Watch your own replays to spot mistakes.

Keep it friendly

Dota games can get heated. Mute players who flame, focus on your own play, and take a break after a few losses. See our healthy gaming habits guide.
